The active ingredient list on most tubes of toothpaste includes "sodium fluoride." The use of fluoride in toothpaste and municipal drinking water was adopted after discoveries were made that it strengthened tooth enamel. Too much fluoride, however, can lead to "fluorosis", a condition characterized by demineralization of bone and tooth enamel. Cuprident's patented MCC® Formulation contains an ionic copper complex that coats the teeth, inhibiting the formation of plaque, but it does not penetrate the tooth enamel. Cuprident contains no fluoride, but its active ingredient (MCC®) is compatible with the use of fluoride, if your dentist recommends it as part of your oral care program.

Fluoride Warning: Two Reports Published in March 2006 Warn of Adverse Health Effects Resulting from Excessive Fluoride Exposure

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) has published its findings after reviewing research on various adverse health effects from exposure to fluoride. The Committee also looked at the different ways in which individuals are exposed to fluoride, including:

  • Water and water-based beverages (the largest contributor to an individual's fluoride exposure)
  • Non-beverage food sources
  • Non-dietary fluoride exposure - it was acknowledged that the greatest source in this category is dental products, primarily toothpastes

Background air concentrations and other sources, including pharmaceuticals and consumer products.

After reviewing the collective evidence on the adverse health effects and total exposure to fluoride, the Committee concluded that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) current allowable level of fluoride in drinking water is not adequately protective of one's health. Their recommendation was that the EPA should update its risk assessment of fluoride, to develop a new, lower standard that would be protective against severe enamel fluorosis, clinical stage II skeletal fluorosis and bone fractures.

On March 22, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reported that in their analysis of fluoride exposure to bottle-fed infants, they found that in 25 of the 28 largest cities in the U.S., at least 15% of formula-fed infants are exposed to excessive levels of fluoride. This exposure was mostly from the tap water used to make the infants' formula.

In an update on March 31, the EWG cited a Wall Street Journal article reporting that research linking an increased risk of a rare bone cancer to drinking fluoridated water, especially in boys, will soon be published in a "peer-reviewed journal."
